The world rarely slows down, and now more than EVER, the constant noise has become the norm. Nonstop notifications, looming deadlines, deep conversations, political chaos, family obligations, and underlying expectations fill every corner of our day, and our minds. While productivity is often celebrated, what’s overlooked is the power of stepping away…the power of intentionally creating space to recharge.
I know, I know…easier said than done. And I can already hear some of U, my dear Leaders, saying, “that would be great, if I had the time…the money…no kids…(U fill in the blank…)” Here’s the truth…taking time to disconnect isn’t a luxury; it’s essential. When we give ourselves permission to pause, we create room for clarity, creativity, and a deep emotional reset. Without that space, we risk burnout, decision fatigue, and a constant sense of overwhelm. And I know U know what I mean. If U are a Leader, U have been there. Guaranteed.
So this month I want to equip U with a few simple and powerful ways to step away from the noise and recharge, however that works best for U:
1. Schedule quiet time like it matters, (because it does)!
Pretend like it’s an appointment, or a date, with yourself. Block off time in your calendar, as frequently as possible, for uninterrupted quiet. Even 10–15 minutes of stillness can help reset your mind and improve focus for the rest of your day. U can sit outside and enjoy your morning cup of coffee or tea, or sit in quiet meditation, or journal in the evening as part of your wind down ritual…simply find when and where and what works for U!
2. Step outside and change your environment.
It’s a proven fact; nature has a grounding effect that’s hard to replicate. This doesn’t involve being outside for hours, unless U want to be. Even a short walk, getting some fresh air, or simply sitting outside can help shift your perspective and calm mental clutter. This isn’t so much about duration, but rather about creating a disciple of connection with nature and the outdoors.
3. Disconnect to reconnect.
I know we have all heard this time and again, and this one is so important and often times REALLY hard to do…put your phone away. Turn off notifications. Leave it behind…on purpose. The constant input we receive keeps our brains in a reactive state, and our bodies and minds were not designed for this overwhelming amount of constant data and disruption. Be selective on your inputs. And know this…stepping away from screens allows your mind to settle and become more intentional. And that’s something worth fighting for, no matter how difficult it is.
4. Create a simple recharge ritual.
Whether it’s journaling, deep breathing, stretching, or listening to calming music, having a go-to ritual signals to your brain that it’s time to slow down. (Are U noticing a theme here?! U have complete autonomy in how U go about creating this space for yourself so that it works with your individual lifestyle.) There’s no right or wrong here, just start. And stick with it.
5. Give yourself permission to do nothing.
Full disclosure: this BY FAR is the hardest one for me to practice. I have to force myself to do nothing, and it’s taken me years to learn how to fight the urge to constantly feel productive. It’s ok; U are not alone. Not every moment needs to be productive. Some of your best ideas and insights will come when you’re not actively chasing them. Rest, relax, breathe…allow yourself space to simply be, and see the new world that opens up to U.
Here’s the bottom line, Leaders…when U step away from the noise, you’re not falling behind, you’re creating the conditions to move forward with greater clarity, energy and focus. The most effective leaders, thinkers, and creators understand that rest isn’t the opposite of progress; it’s PART of it. So make time and space…for U. I promise, investing in yourself is the best investment U can ever make, and oftentimes the most powerful move U can make is simply…to pause.
With love & gratitude,
Jodi
