After working with thousands of individuals and companies over the past 27 years in the leadership development space, I can share the following with U with complete and total confidence.

But first, let me address something. What employees really want isn’t complicated, however it is often overlooked. Yes, compensation packages, bonuses, and extra perks are nice. Those things may attract people (remember the days of bean bag chairs and ping pong tables in every trendy workplace?) but make no mistake about it, these nice-to-haves don’t keep your team fulfilled, engaged, or performing at their best.

At the very core there are three things I’ve seen consistently…across industries, roles, and generations…that employees truly need and deeply desire. And their presence in your workplace and culture matters. A lot.

1. To Feel Seen, Heard, and Genuinely Valued

Every single person wants to know they matter. Now this isn’t just for what they produce, but for who they ARE. People want to feel recognized, respected, and appreciated in a real way. Not once a year, not only when something goes wrong or exceptionally right. Your team members crave this recognition consistently.

When leaders take the time to acknowledge effort, listen with intention, and treat people like they truly matter, something profound shifts. Engagement becomes natural, not forced. It’s palpable! People don’t give their best to companies, they give their best to environments where they feel valued. As leaders, we are at choice as to what culture we allow, and what culture we nurture and create.

2. Clarity That Creates Confidence

I’ve seen more frustration come from lack of clarity than lack of capability. And not by a small margin, by a BIG one.

People want to know what’s expected of them. They want to understand what success looks like, and they want to see how their role connects to something bigger than just a task list. When we provide clarity, we remove the guesswork. Clarity builds confidence, and confident employees perform better…period. Great leaders don’t just delegate work; they connect purpose to performance. Making that conscious shift within your team members and throughout your workplace will give U a huge advantage and will allow your team to soar to levels U may never have known were possible.

3. The Opportunity to Grow and Move Forward

No one wants to feel stuck. And remember this…growth doesn’t always mean a promotion or a new title, it means progress. Learning…Stretching…Evolving.

When people feel like they are moving forward, they stay engaged. And beyond that, they bring energy and they take ownership for their role and their responsibilities. U will see and FEEL commitment, and a committed employee is FAR different than a compliant one. This is where going above and beyond and discretionary effort come from, and where innovation and creativity are born. Provide a roadmap forward and your team members will flourish and they’ll “wow” U with how they show up.

This is the real work of leadership.

After nearly three decades in this space, here’s what I know:

Fulfillment at work isn’t built through programs or perks. It’s built through leadership, clarity, time, attention, and love. Yes, I said it…love.

When you create an environment where people feel valued, clear, and they’re growing, U don’t just improve performance, U build trust, loyalty and momentum. And ultimately, U build a culture people don’t want to leave, but rather one where they can bloom.

Make the choice to become that empowering leader today, and if I can help U, know that I am always only a phone call or email away.

With love & gratitude,
Jodi
