After 27 years in the leadership development space, I’ve learned that there’s a subtle yet transformational shift that separates transactional leaders from transformational ones. It’s how they answer this simple yet telling question:
Do U want more FROM your people,
or more FOR your people?
Most leadership models, even the polished, corporate-friendly ones that have been around for ages, are built around extracting performance. More productivity, more revenue, more output, more results…that’s how success is measured.
I wanted to flip that paradigm when I created U & Improved nearly two decades ago. I began to teach companies that a heart-based leader asks:
• How do I want my people to grow?
• Who are they becoming under my leadership?
• Are they stronger, more confident and more capable because of me?
• Do they feel seen, valued, heard, understood and developed, not just evaluated?
When U want more for your people than from them, something powerful happens…performance rises anyway.
I see it time and time again. Loyalty deepens, ownership increases, and engagement becomes intrinsic.
And because of this, results become sustainable, not forced. Now THAT’s tangible success.
For 17 years, this has been the foundation of my work through U & Improved. Long before it was trendy to talk about empathy, psychological safety, or purpose-driven culture, we were teaching it, in what I call the Heart-Based Leadership movement.
And let me be very clear…
It’s not soft.
It’s not fluffy.
It’s not naïve.
Rather, it is disciplined, courageous, and deeply human. And right now, given the state of the world, we collectively need it learn it, teach it, and BE it, more than ever.
People are exhausted, distracted and carrying more invisible weight than we realize. They don’t need leaders who demand more output; they need leaders who genuinely care about them, and support them in building more capacity.
Heart-based leadership is about holding a high standard and a strong heart at the same time. It’s about results and relationships, accountability and empathy, growth and grace. This isn’t just a leadership style, it’s a movement. And if you’re reading this, dear Leader, U are likely already part of it. And if U aren’t…yet…then let’s talk, sooner than later.
Let’s raise the bar together, not by pushing harder, but by leading better.
Because what I know with complete certainty is this…when we want more for our people than from them, everybody wins.
With love & gratitude,
Jodi
